This body of street photographs seeks to capture men in unguarded moments - at work, at rest, in transit, in thought. It explores a variety of male subjects in the context of city environments.
I began developing the series in 2007 while I was working as a technical assistant for a Broadway musical. This work environment - populated by stagehands and lighting/electrical technicians - was my first experience working in a predominantly male field; as a novice and an out-numbered female, I found myself feeling invisible and inept at relating to my coworkers. At the same time, I was still new to living in New York City and adjusting to receiving male attention on the street in the form of flirtations and come-ons. This contradiction of invisibility/attention from men was intriguing to me and I began being drawn to male subjects while out photographing and exploring the city.
I am attracted to street photography where the subject is unaware he is being photographed because it allows the inner life/thoughts of the subject to remain a mystery. I look for these solitary moments that stand in contrast with the hustle and noise of city life.
