2014 Favorites: Engagement, Wedding and Family Photography

Oh boy, prepare yourself for a long blog post -- I had a hard time narrowing down my favorite images of the year! I had such a good time looking back through the year's photos and was reminded again how lucky I am to capture moments of love and beauty for a living. A sincere thank you to all the amazing couples and families whom I worked with this year -- you make my job a dream come true. Here's to a happy, healthy and beautiful 2015. xoxo

Monica + Lincoln // Croton-on-Hudson Wedding Photography

Where to start with this amazing wedding? First off, I went to Oberlin College with this rad couple and was so so thrilled to reconnect with them and to capture their gorgeous wedding. They are sweet and beautiful people, inside and out. The day started off with a big Ultimate Frisbee game at Croton Gorge Park where all guests were invited to participate. Monica was sad she had to leave the game early to get her hair done. :) Monica got dressed at her parents' home in her old childhood room, which I loved. The ceremony and reception took place at Croton State Park and many guests were camping or staying in the cabins. I am a sucker for DIY weddings and this one was a true labor of love created by their friends and family: Lincoln's cousin provided beautiful musical accompaniment on the banjo during the ceremony; a friend officiated their ceremony; all the flowers came from Monica's father's garden; their friends helped them make all the hand-painted signs, reception decor, bouquets and flower arrangements; Monica's brother brewed their beer (!); Lincoln's other cousin baked four beautiful and delicious cakes; another friend of theirs live painted the reception! On top of that, since they are very eco-conscious, all the plates and cutlery was made of compostable materials. What a special day! Congratulations to this amazing pair.

Emily + Ben // NYC City Hall Wedding Photography

Emily and Ben got hitched at City Hall in Manhattan, witnessed by their close family and friends. Later that day the festivities continued at the rad Brooklyn Crab in Red Hook, which has a fun beach-shack vibe perfect for a summer evening celebration. (Side note, the next time I go back to Brooklyn Crab -  not on a gig - I plan to try their amazingly tasty-looking beer-garitas!). I loved all the joy and love that radiated throughout the whole day, not to mention how flippin' adorable this couple is together and their beautiful smiles. Congratulations!

Sarah + Justin // NYC Wedding Photography at Housing Works

Sarah and Justin were married at Housing Works Bookstore in Soho, NYC. We started at the Mondrian Soho then strolled up Crosby Street for portraits before the ceremony. So many strangers wished them congratulations in the few short blocks from the hotel to Housing Works - who says New Yorkers aren't friendly? Smiles and laughter abounded during the whole event. Congrats!!

Charles + Ryan // NYC City Hall Wedding Photography

Charles and Ryan were married in true NYC fashion on the 1-year anniversary of their engagement. After going back and forth about whether they wanted a big blow-out wedding or an intimate affair with close friends and family, they opted for the latter and asked me to accompany them "paparazzi-style" on their special day. We started off at City Hall for the ceremony, strolled over the Brooklyn Bridge for portraits, dined on pizza in South Street Seaport for lunch, headed over to Chelsea Piers for bowling, hit up the High Line for more photos, then met up with a group of their friends at Murray's Cheese Bar for champagne toasts and dinner. They opted for a cheese plate instead of a cake for their dessert - gotta love that! Cheers to these special guys - I love you and congrats!

Lauren + Scott // Charlottesville, VA Wedding Photography

This is the beautiful wedding of Scott and Lauren, my dear friend for over 20 years! We have been bffs since 5th grade when we bonded over our mutual love of King Arthur stories and musical theater. :)  Like my brother's recent wedding, I wasn't the hired photographer but snuck in photo-taking in between my duties as bridesmaid. (That's why there are no photos of the ceremony or the dance party - I can't have a camera hold me back on the dance floor!).

The day was full of artful details and DIY elements. Scott is a talented artist and illustrator and created all the chalk drawings on the table settings. Lauren's mother altered Lauren's vintage dress, made the bouquets and all the terrariums on the tables as well. In addition, my dear husband played guitar during the ceremony, my brother-in-law officiated the ceremony and another friend of ours sang a beautiful Mexican ballad during the first dance. The setting for the day was University of Virginia's campus gardens and Colonade Club - you couldn't have asked for a more perfect summer day to celebrate love and all the beauty of life. The evening ended the way every wedding should - eating pizza on the hotel hallway floor amid fits of giggles. xoxoxo

David + Maddie // Virginia Wedding Photography

Three cheers for my little brother and my new sister Maddie on an absolutely beautiful wedding! (You many recognize this handsome couple from their engagement photos). Though I was not the hired photographer for the event, I couldn't resist bringing my camera along and snapping away from the sidelines (when I wasn't too busy partying, of course). The wedding took place at the Airlie Center in Warrenton, VA - an absolutely charming hotel and conference center complex with sprawling grounds and lush gardens. The couples beautiful ketubah was created by artist and letterer Riva Brown of Living Letters Studio; she is a family friend and also designed the ketubah for my wedding and my sister's as well. Another family tradition that I loved was Maddie's veil, which has been worn in her family for four generations. Welcome to our family Maddie, we love you!

Moira + Scott // West Point, NY Wedding Photography

Moira and Scott were wed on a lovely November day at Holy Trinity Chapel in West Point, NY, home of the military academy Scott attended. The reception was held at the nearby Mansion at the Colonial Terrace. These two are so head over heels for each other and it really comes out in their portraits - they are giddy with glee and love! Moira planned the wedding while living in across the continent in Alaska (including helping to design her custom made dress which she tried on for the first time that day!) and everything went off without a hitch. Congrats on a beautiful day! Thanks to Nathan for 2nd shooting with me and Kate of Green Apple Weddings for coordinating.

Hilary + Matt // Brooklyn Wedding Photography

There is so much I love about this October wedding at Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture in Park Slope, Brooklyn. First off, the couple is absolutely adorable and head-over-heels for each other. They are both writers and started dating when they lived down the hall from each other in their apartment building -- a New York City rom-com fantasy come true. Secondly, the cake. Not only did it depict beautiful silhouette scenes of the couple, but it also lit up from the inside! How amazing is that? Lastly, Hilary surprise serenaded Matt during the reception and had their guests shower him with plastic hearts while she and her bridesmaid sang to him. So incredibly sweet.

Melissa + Matt // Brooklyn Wedding Photography

In early September Melissa and Matt were married at Williamsburg's Grand Ferry Park, followed by a lovely lunch reception at nearby Aurora Restaurant. I loved all the vintage and colorful details, including a romance novel gift for each guest. Melissa and Matt were were so creative, sweet, grounded and fun to photograph. Congrats!

Angel + Grant // NYC Cruise Ship Wedding Photography

Angel and Grant got married on the Atlantica Yacht, which docks in Chelsea Piers then sails around Manhattan, offering gorgeous views of the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge and more. The sun shone brightly on the couple and their family and friends during the ceremony and as the sun set every one got down on the dance floor. Congrats!

Doug + Dorothy // NYC Wedding Photography

This was a very special wedding of our friends Doug and Dorothy (Doug is in MiniBoone with my husband Craig and they've been playing music together for around 7 years). I was happy to be 2nd shooting for the wonderful Shawn Connell for most of the event and co-manning the photobooth for the rest. More photos of the event (including Shawn's masterful work) can be found here. What a joyful day!

Theo + Marcelo // Brooklyn Wedding Photography

Last weekend I photographed a wedding at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture in Park Slope, Brooklyn with the talented Rebecca Fishman. The groom is from Argentina and the whole event had a lovely blending of the bride and groom's heritages. Congrats to the couple - they are head over heels for each other and it really shows.
