2013 in Review // Part 1: Music

In 2013 I shot SXSW and CMJ festivals for Time Out New York magazine (SXSW coverage here, CMJ here). It's fun to see which artists who are breaking around March end up in the spotlight later on during the year. Festivals take a lot of stamina (comfy shoes are a must!) but they are pretty much dream gigs for music-loving photographers IMO. Here are some of my favorite shots of the acts I caught this year.

SXSW (in order pictured): St Lucia, DIIV, Icona Pop, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Neighbourhood, Charlie XCX, Autre Ne Veut, Foxygen, Flatbush Zombies, Solange, Kendrick Lamar, Gold Gang, Sky Ferreira, Marnie Stern, Elle King, Walk Off the Earth, The Specials, Lissie, Black Lips, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Vampire Weekend

The Spring Standards // NYC Music Photography

I shot this pic of The Spring Standards in Nov 2011 and decided to give it a little digital makeover yesterday. Ya know, just for the funz of it. If you've never heard them before, you're in for a treat. Listen up!

PS - I know the glorious Heather in this band from when we were tots doing musicals in her mom's back yard: here's the proof!

Charles Bradley & Neko Case // NYC Music Photography

Last month I had the extreme pleasure of shooting Charles Bradley and Neko Case at the Lowdown Hudson Blues Festival for Time Out NY. Some of my favorite shots are below,

more are here

. I'd never seen Charles Bradley before and was blown away - he's probably the best performer I've ever seen and I loved how he went out into the crowd after the show, hugging fans and posing for photos. Neko Case had some technical problems that night (I think her amp or monitor blew up?) but that didn't stop my enjoyment. She's my girl!

SXSW Favorites

SXSW! I photographed the festival for Time Out NY (

full coverage and photo slideshows here

) and saw around 50 bands in 5 days - nutso! When I get in that intense shooting mode, it unfortunately often becomes more about getting maximum coverage instead of really enjoying/listening to the performances. That said, there were a bunch of real standout shows and I'm happy to share my favorite shots (in no particular order).

Y La Bamba

It's December tomorrow, whoops!

Oh dear. November just flew by. I was very busy with projects, hence my lack of posting on this here lil' blog. Here's a recap of what I've been up to this month!

  • I shot two more series of Occupy Wall St portraits for NY Observer (one, two) before Bloomberg cleared out the tents. Plus three photos from the first group are in this month's Adbusters. Amazing!
  • I shot thirteen shows over five weeks for Ars Nova's ANT Fest. Photos can be found over on Ars Nova's facebook page.
  • I got officially hired to work part time for TimeOut NY Kids as a photo assistant. Favorite shoots so far have been Fall Kids Fest and PB & Co. Aww and yum, respectively.
  • I did some fun new promo shots with the incomparable Spring Standards. I'll post their final choices once they're edited!
  • Finally, I was lucky enough to shoot the rehearsal and performance of Cheyenne Jackson and the NY Pops' "Mad Men"-themed concert at Carnegie Hall. That man really hit the gene pool jackpot.
